The San Luis Valley Interagency Fire Management Unit plan to conduct two prescribed burns this spring at English Valley and the Baca National Wildlife Refuge. Specific timing of these burns will depend on fuels and weather conditions.
The 877 acre English Valley prescribed burn will take place on the Rio Grande National Forest’s Divide Ranger District approximately 5 miles northeast of Del Norte. The purpose of this burn is to rejuvenate grass and shrub cover to improve pronghorn habitat. For more information, contact Sid Hall 719-852-6205.
The Baca prescribed burn units total 1,315 acres and will occur on the western portion of the Baca National Wildlife Refuge south of Crestone. The purpose of the prescribed burn is to reduce fuels and improve wildlife habitat for migratory birds. For more information, contact Baca National Wildlife Refuge at (719) 256-5527.
